The Modern Aikido For Self-Defense

Street AIKIDO is a modern branch of aikido adapted for real-life self-defense situations. It differs from traditional aikido in its practicality and focus on effectiveness in street conditions. Here are the key features that set Street AIKIDO apart from classical aikido:

  1. In Street AIKIDO, the emphasis is on practicing techniques that allow for effective defense against the most common attacks in street situations, such as punches, kicks, and grabs to clothing.
  2. In Street AIKIDO, the attack begins at a closer distance between partners than in traditional aikido (approximately one step apart).
  3. In Street AIKIDO, partners begin attacking and defending while in a free stance: feet shoulder-width apart, one foot half a step forward, and hands down.
  4. In Street AIKIDO the attacker strikes without swinging.
  5. In Street AIKIDO, techniques are practiced to defend against strikes from both the "near" and "far" hand.

In classical aikido the attacker, after making a strike or a grab, is always in a position in which the left foot is in front if the attack is made with the left hand, or the right foot if the attack is made with the right hand (pic.1, 2). These are the rules of practicing techniques in aikido training.

However, from the point of view of self-defense these days, it is unwise to practice techniques only from this method of attack. In fact, much more often the intruder approaches the opponent at arm's length without showing any intention to attack. And at such a distance it is convenient to strike with both "near" and "far" hand, without taking a step (as is done in Aikido).

There is a way to study aikido techniques to protect against the most likely attacks on an unarmed person in our time - this is StreetAIKIDO. Here, much attention is paid to training defense against strikes from both the “near” and “far” hand at a short distance (pic.3, 4).
